EMDR therapy helps disrupt limiting thoughts to support recovery.
EMDR Therapy for Recovery
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of treatment we offer at Recovery Bay Center. This type of addiction therapy aims to disrupt the thoughts and images you have that could be limiting your recovery. EMDR therapy can be effective, if fully embraced, as a component of your care.

What Is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing?
EMDR therapy is a type of psychotherapy. It can help you overcome and manage the symptoms you may have from EMDR therapy a previous life experience or trauma. This procedure aims to help you heal from that emotional damage in a meaningful manner so you can go on with your life. There’s no way to simply reverse what’s happened. However, with EMDR therapy, it is possible to find a way to live with it.
In studies, it is believed that those who engage in EMDR therapy are able to see improvements in their addiction therapy and mental health disorder therapy at a faster rate than those who are restricted to mainstream forms of psychotherapy. The benefit here is not just getting on with your life but actually healing the brain in the process.

How Does EMDR Therapy Work?
There are eight phases to EMDR therapy. During the process, your therapist will first determine what type of traumatic events or memories you have that may be causing you to struggle with addiction or mental health disorders. Then, you will have to hold various images or thoughts of that event in your mind and then track the therapist’s hand with your eyes. This is to help change your brain’s connection with the memory and emotions you feel.
During the process, you’ll work with your therapist over a series of sessions. EMDR therapy occurs in a safe location where you will feel comfortable. There will be a request to remember events in your past. However you won’t have to engage fully in reliving that experience.
What Are the Benefits of This Type of Addiction Therapy?
There are a number of benefits possible with EMDR therapy, such as:
- Speeding up the recovery process
- Overcoming trauma that could be behind your addiction
- Working through emotions in a safe environment
- Feeling more in control over the way you feel and experience challenges
- Enabling your brain to heal from the trauma you’ve experienced
Many people who need addiction treatment have underlying mental health trauma that hasn’t been appropriately processed by the brain. Working through that is critical, but that’s not possible on your own.
